The Founding Parents of Donvale Christian College (DCC) wanted to define a key point of difference between DCC and other schools. This point of difference can be found in the College’s Educational Creed. This foundational document defines the theological basis upon which the College operates and the purpose of Christian Education. It states “Since, therefore, the fruit of all Christian education depends on the gracious work of the Holy Spirit, both parents and teachers are to perform their task with constant prayer that the Spirit may enable them to be good instruments in His hands for bringing the children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, and that He may so bless their work that the children come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and Master, Whom to follow and serve in all spheres of life, is their greatest privilege and joy.”
As parents consider Donvale Christian College a key question that is often asked is ‘what do you mean by Christian Education’? It is the intention of this document to answer this important question.
All of us have been in school and this seems to give us permission to have an opinion on education and what schools ought to do!
It is a fair assumption to hold that everyone believes in the importance of education, so issues such as Literacy and Numeracy standards, values education, standardised testing, national curriculum, school funding and technology are all issues of interest to parents, educators and governments.
Christian educators have a similar perspective to other educators when considering important educational matters such as; ‘schools being a safe emotional and physical environment’, ‘high standards of teaching and learning’ and ‘all children having the right to a quality education’ as matters of common concern.
There are, however, some issues on which Christian educators may have a very different perspective. The purpose of education is one such issue.
As we consider the purpose of Christian Education at DCC, we need to appreciate the foundational principles and the key themes which underpin and permeate the curriculum at DCC.
