ANZCA Graduation Ceremony and Concert 2017 (Australia and New Zealand Cultural Arts)
Last Saturday (25 March), Joshua van der End, Laura Paterson and Isabel Khong took part in the annual ANZCA Graduation ceremony at Flockhart Hall, MLC.
A big feather in our cap is that Joshua was invited to open the concert! He played a brilliant performance of Khatchaturian's 'Toccata', in front of a packed house which included Professor Kenneth Lampl (Director of Music, ANU), a visiting guest speaker and a group of students and teachers from Indonesia.
Joshua received his Associate Diploma of Performance, his second Diploma in two years.
Isabel and Laura received Encouragement Awards for Excellence.
All three are students of May Gavin. It is wonderful to have DCC represented by three wonderful students at this international event.
Instrumental Music Coordinator
At Donvale Christian College we acknowledge the creativity of our Lord God and the gifts and talents that he has given us. Jesus has taught us that we need to share our artistic talents with others (Matthew 25: 14-28), to not hide them and to develop them so that we may reveal His glory through them and to help His kingdom grow. As a Performing Arts department, we acknowledge the gift of performance Music and the skills that the students of DCC need in order to grow and develop as a performer.
Instrumental Music and Ensembles
We are incredibly privileged to be able to offer families an extensive Instrumental Music program that includes private tuition on most instruments as well as a growing Ensembles and Bands program.
Every student who plays or sings has the opportunity to become engaged in an ensemble at Donvale Christian College. All students who learn an instrument at school including voice are strongly encouraged to be a member of at least one of the following ensembles. Students who learn outside of school are also encouraged to further develop their musical skills by joining an ensemble.
· Senior String Orchestra
· Junior String Orchestra
· Training Band
· Clarinet Ensemble
· Secondary Vocal Ensembles
· Flute Ensemble
· Junior Concert Band
· Senior Concert Band
· Big Band
· Symphony Orchestra
· Senior Worship Band
· Piano Ensemble
As well as opportunities to perform at our many concerts throughout the year, students also have the opportunity to perform at various functions. These include instrumental recitals, eisteddfods, festivals and community events.
Upcoming Music Events
Throughout the year, we have regular musical events and performances, most of which are open for families and friends to attend. While some may be advertised on this page, all events with up-to-date details are listed on the Calendar page.
We invite you to attend a Music Night or two this year, as the performances are fantastic and your attendance and support gives encouragement to our students.
IBP TRAINING BAND SOARS INTO ACTION
On Friday March 10 at 7:30am our vibrant College 'Training Band' soared into action as they created their first notes as a full music ensemble, and discovered the power and enjoyment of creating music as a team! All fifty-three students filled the S1 band room with wonderful sounds that pulsated with energy and sheer youthful enthusiasm. The 'Training Band,' is part of the College's ever growing Instrumental Bands Program, which provides students (from Years 4 - 8) detailed group tuition on one of the numerous band instruments. This extraordinary school subsidized IBP program gives young students a chance to 'have a go,' at one of the four instrumental categories (Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion and Electric Bass) of instruments, as they explore and develop their musical talents.
Our Head of Instrumental Music, Phillip Reichman along with brass teacher David Robinson and woodwinds teacher, Peter Sheridan leads the 50 minute rehearsal. The IBP 'Training Band' will perform at the Mid-Year Annual Concert (Karralyka), several Primary Assemblies, the fantastic 'Bands Night,' as well as compete at the annual state-wide Victorian School's Music Festival held at BMW Federation Square.
The Instrumental Band Program has been growing in the number of students that are enrolling each year. With the grace of God, the program's mission statement, 'to train young students in exploring their musical gifts,' and have LOTS of fun in the process has become a reality.
'Generations in Jazz' Music Festival 2016
On the 6th of May, Students from the Music Department at Donvale Christian College travelled to South Australia where they joined 5000 other students from across Australia and some even from New Zealand. This weekend is known as the “Mount Gambier, Generations in Jazz Festival”.
36 students and 6 teachers journeyed into the depths of the James Morrison Pavilion to be literally blown away. The Generations in Jazz weekend included a program which was a mixture of student performances and concerts, filled to the brim with Jazz.
The Colleges big bands competed in division 3 and 4, while the vocalists competed in division 2.
The weekend is consistently amazing; the thrill of watching students your own age perform at such a high standard never gets old - and then the three concerts each day are always a highlight.
This year, the feature performances included the One O'clock Lab Band, Kate Cebrano (world renowned vocalist), and Wycliffe Gordan on trombone and the always sensational performances from The Idea of North and the music master Mr James Morrison himself.
The weekend wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for Mr Reichman and Mrs Barnett-Harris who organised the trip, the hospitality and generosity of the teachers and volunteers, and also the owners of the South Gambier football club for always having a clean and comfortable venue for us to inhabit over the weekend. It is a highlight of the year for many of us students and we look forward to this every year. Finally thank you to our Principals for supporting the music department in attending this exciting weekend.
Laura Paterson (Yr 11) and Sarah Meyers (Yr 11).
