By logging in to the DCC network I acknowledge that I have read and agreed to the following policy and conditions of use:
Overview
The aim of the Computer Usage Policy is to ensure that the college computers are easy to use, enhance learning and kept fully functional. To achieve this there are four general rules.
- Look after the computer equipment ( Be careful )
- Leave the computers setup as they were originally ( Don't meddle )
- Only use your own account. ( Mind your own business )
- Do not use college computers for activities that may be considered offensive. ( Be nice )
A more detailed explanation of the implications of these rules is given below.
Care for the Equipment
- I agree to make sure that the college computers are always looked after and kept in good condition.
- I will not bring food or drink into areas where computers are in use.
- I will work carefully in the computer areas and be sure to not damage any of the equipment.
Desktop Computers
- I will always leave the computer settings in the way that I found them and will immediately report any unusual setups. This includes colour schemes, backgrounds, menu items and icons on the desktop.
- I will not put or save software on to the college desktop computers. This includes games, screen savers or any other program.
- I will not use any software that is not found in the start menu.
- I will report any software I find on the computers that should not be there to a teacher for them to be removed.
- I will not move or rearrange any of the college computer equipment.
Notebook Computers
- I acknowledge that I am able to install legal copies of software on my notebook computer for recreational and educational use and may make changes to their set-up but these changes must meet with college approval.
- I understand that I must provide the college with proof of ownership of software to be installed before approval can be given.
- I must ensure the security of my laptop at all times. When not in use it must be locked in a locker or a classroom. Failure to comply will incur a $5 fine and a detention.
Printers
I will be responsible in the management of my printing and I will observe the following guidelines in regard to printer usage at DCC:
- Printer problems must be reported to staff
- Only standard paper is to be used in printers.
- Printing costs 5c a page for black and white.
- Printing costs 5c a page for black and white.
- Three colour printers are available but pages will cost $1.00 in the LTC, N_Block and in the Z_Block.
- “Sharing” of printer account money is not allowed.
Privacy
I understand and accept the following guidelines in regard to privacy at DCC:
- Network settings prevent students from accessing another student's files.
- Files stored on the College network and student notebooks are not completely private.
- Random checks will be made of student files and mail areas to see that the College's standards and rules are being observed.
Accounts
- I recognise that usage of the college computers is a privilege given to me and I will never allow another person to use my college computer account.
- I will only print material that is relevant to my college work.
- I recognise that once my personal printing budget is used up that I will need to pay at the LT office for more printing allowance.
- I recognise that all activities that occur through my college account are my personal responsibility even if another student using my account does them.
- I will not use another student computer account.
- I will only store work or other files in my home directory (H:) or shared in the “DropZone” and will not change any other folder.
Passwords
- I will not tell any other student my password. If I know another student's password I will tell them and ask them to change their password. I will ensure that no other student can discover my password. I will change my password if I suspect that some other person may know my password.
- Passwords may be changed at any time.
- Replacing a forgotten password will cost $1.00. No credit can be given.
Mail Usage
- The college email system will only be used to send pleasant and polite mail and I will only use it at times approved by the teacher
- A teacher must give permission before I use mail in class.
- Mail is not to be annoying.
Computer Use
- I will only use computers for activities approved by the college.
- I will use computers as instructed by staff during class.
- I will not bring pictures into the college computer system unless they are relevant to my studies and have teacher approval.
- I will never have digital media that is of an offensive or pornographic nature in my file area or on my Notebook computer. Digital media of movie stars, pop stars and other personalities will need to be checked by a teacher before being stored on the college computer system.
- I will keep the storage of material on the college network to a minimum.
Internet Access
- I will obtain a teacher's permission before using the college's internet connection
- The material I browse on the Internet will be related to schoolwork.
- I will not download or view files from the Internet without permission.
- I realise that all sites visited are recorded in a log and that staff can request that I explain why I was viewing a site.
Penalties
It is the college's aim to provide a fully functional and easy to use computer system. I recognise that as an immediate consequence of not complying with the college computer usage policy I may lose my access to the college computers or other features of the system such as printing, internet access and email for a time.
